Che il packaging sia importante ormai si sa...

Oltre a curare quello, mi ripropongo sempre di stare più attenta al bigliettino, di sceglierlo con più cura e soprattutto di scrivere qualcosa di sensato e sentito.

Gli inglesi in questo sono più bravi, i biglietti di auguri, ringraziamento, invito ecc. sono un'industria fiorente, dove i grafici si sbizzarriscono e creano dei veri capolavori.

Everybody knows that packaging is important...

Besides taking care of that, I always propose being more careful with the card, choosing the right one and above all writing something consistent and heartfelt.

The English are better, greeting, thanks, invitation cards, etc.. are a thriving industry where graphics indulge and create real masterpieces.

Robin in the jar

Ecco il mio lavoretto, il mio pettirosso, e anche la mia bolla di Natale. 

Ho trovato il pettirosso su una bancarella a Notting Hill qualche settimana fa, di barattoli invece ne ho ormai una collezione.

Here is my Christmas project, my robin in the snow globe. I found the robin on a stall at Notting Hill market some weeks ago, and about the jar, I have a collection indeed.

Ecco cosa vi serve / What you need

barattolo di vetro / glass jar

neve artificiale & glitter / artificial snow & glitter

acqua (è suggerita quella distillata, io l'ho fatta bollire) / distilled or boiled water 

glicerina (da aggiungere all'acqua, serve a rallentare il movimento della neve) / glycerin (to be added to water, it slows down the movement of the snow)

statuina o qualsiasi altra cosa vogliate nella bolla (purchè non di metallo) / figurines or anything else you want in the globe, except for metal items

colla epossidica / epoxy glue

L'assemblaggio è molto semplice, gli unici accorgimenti sono di lasciare asciugare bene la colla e di fare qualche prova per la proporzione tra acqua e glicerina.

Se volete potete anche colorare il tappo... ma a me piaceva il classico della marmellata.

The assembly is very simple, the only precautions are to let the glue dry thoroughly and to test the proportion of water and glycerin.

If you want you can also paint the lid... but I liked the classic jam one.

Da qualche tempo mi chiedevo perchè a Natale il pettirosso sia ovunque in UK, come decorazione per l'albero o sulle cartoline di auguri.

More recently, the robin has become strongly associated with Christmas, taking a starring role on many Christmas cards since the mid 19th century. The Robin has also appeared on many Christmas postage stamps. An old British folk tale seeks to explain the Robin's distinctive breast. Legend has it that when Jesus was dying on the cross, the Robin, then simply brown in colour, flew to his side and sang into his ear in order to comfort him in his pain. The blood from his wounds stained the Robin's breast, and thereafter all Robins got the mark of Christ's blood upon them. An alternative legend has it that its breast was scorched fetching water for souls in Purgatory. The association with Christmas, however, more probably arises from the fact that postmen in Victorian Britain wore red uniforms and were nicknamed "Robin"; the Robin featured on the Christmas card is an emblem of the postman delivering the card. In the 1960s, in a vote publicized by The Times newspaper, the Robin was adopted as the unofficial national bird of the UK.

Christmas lights in London

Mi pare giunta l'ora di una presa di coscienza: Natale è alle porte.

Potrei anche continuare ad ignorare questo fatto, ma si sa... Natale arriva quando vuole, e io mi ci ritroverei dentro senza esserne preparata.

I segnali sono tanti intorno a me, ma chissà perchè quest'anno lo spirito natalizio tarda a contagiarmi.

I could keep on ignoring this fact, but you know... Christmas comes when it wants, and I would found myself in without being prepared.

There are so many signals around me, but I wonder why the Christmas spirit is still so far from me.

I mesi autunnali sono stati tanto intensi quanto rapidi, in un soffio è arrivato dicembre... e tra pochissimo tornerò in Italia. Il fatto di passare le feste natalizie da un'altra parte e quindi di aver scelto di non addobbare casa qui (va beh, un pochino...) mi fanno apparire il Natale lontano, nel tempo come nello spazio, almeno finchè non finirò di lavorare e salirò sull'aereo.

The Autumn has been as intense as fast, December came in the bat of an eye... and shortly I will be back to Italy. Maybe because we spend Christmas somewhere else and I've chosen not to decorate the house here (okay, just a little...) Christmas seems to be away, in time as in space, at least until I will be on holiday and the plane will take off.
