Looking for inspiration

After the Union Jack and the Emma's cushion, through some Christmas ornaments, I was looking for inspiration for my next needlepoint project, for what will become the new coating of my restored sewing stool.
I gathered some material, and then I realized that a common thread links all the images. The floral art is everywhere... vivid colours and delicate patterns, far atmosphere in time and space...

Passando dal movimento Arts and Crafts...
Passing by the Arts and Crafts...
1. The Blue Bird
2. Bird and Tulip
3. The Saladin
4. The Purple Bird

Motivi ricorrenti, colori pastello, contorni sottolineati, fiori e foglie stilizzati:

3. Iris d'Eau by Felix Aubert

And finally, the Chinese floral motifs, where the flowers are joined by the birds... both in the classic and in the modern wallpapers:

Silver tags

I know that Christmas has just passed, but I would like to show you a project that I made before the holidays. I have not posted it before because these are the tags that I used for the gifts... but actually it is a project not just for Christmas.

They are salt dough ornaments.
Please don't ask the official recipe... the ingredients are
flour (2 cups)
salt (1 cup)
warm water (1 cup)
but starting from these quantity I made various additions until I get a consistency that I felt to be appropriate and I lost the thread on quantity!
Anyway it's really simple, when you have a sticky dough-like clay but more porous means that it is ok!

Then I used cookie cutters and letter stamps for the words: there are visible imperfections, but I like them...

I let them dry instead of put into the oven to prevent them puff up, but before remember to make a small hole for the ribbon... The complete drying can take up to three days, remember to turn them occasionally. Finally... colour: I used a silver paint spray.

They are very easy, cute and customizable: words, greetings, names... You can write everything, but also play with the texture and create stripes, flowers, geometrics on the surface by gently pressing laces, fabrics, everything you find around you.

Maybe not so cold

Blue has never been one of my favorite colours... but never say never.
Maybe because I'm using it in a lot of projects, maybe because Farrow & Ball is a must, maybe because it's very common and the eye becomes accustomed... the colours from gray to blue petrol no longer seem so cold.
Always with white, with a touch of mustard or natural wood, they are elegant and have personality. It almost seems like they have something to say with their a bit aged and never brilliant coat, they are from the past...
In fact I like these colours in classic shapes, from the Chesterfield sofa to the wallpapers by William Morris, through high skirting and  plaster cornice.

In English there is even a term that defines this colour, TEAL, that is a greenish blue, tea leaf colour (fixed on tea as usual!)... maybe this is the reason why it is so common?

A kitchen with a view

Someone told me that is not always clear if talking about my house, I mean the current one in London or the Italian one. Maybe they are right, but actually they both are "home" for me. Considering the London house as home took a long time, but I cannot forget the other one. There I spent time and efforts, like painting on Sundays morning!
However, in order to help you I give my advice: if there some pink it means it's Italy for sure.
I've used a lot colours there, everything has been done before the British influence: I used to consider white a fake colour, just a base for something else.
Today, after the wardrobe, the bookcase, the bathroom, the fridge and the Christmas decorations, I show you the kitchen: a before and after that I hope you will enjoy.
The style has been the same of the other rooms:
do it yourself and keep as much as you can.

Before

Unfortunately, the space dedicated to the kitchen was in such poor conditions that very little is original, not even the ceramic sink and the huge window with iron uprights that I liked so much (the first was broken, and for the window I opted for a new sliding one with more comfortable double glazing).

I love the result: the large window from the work plan up to the ceiling and being on the top floor gives a lot of light... I'm joking but I say that is my own poor version of a New York penthouse!

The proper kitchen is simple and white, and is just the lower part. I don't like kitchen wall cupboards in general, and in any case they were not suitable while they would have reduced space and light.
The side walls are full of antique brackets, shelves and recovered corner cupboards (thanks mamy!).

The ceiling is white (always, it seems higher) and the walls are deep pink, the same shade of the design on the tiles, which are the original ones and I love them!
Needless to say, cans and other stuff are the result of years collections and gifts!

By the way, only to share my personal evolution... there was not space enough for all the appliances, so I sacrificed the oven (I thought: I just need the microwave) for the dishwasher!
Now I'd be in trouble with the choice... the only solution is to look for a bigger kitchen as it isn't anymore just a survival space!

Cosa ne pensate?
Do you like it?

Cosy bedroom

If like me you tend to be active, as sometimes A. is tempted to shoot some anesthetic to make me relax, then you can understand how boring is to stay at home when you are sick.

I like staying at home, but if I'm okay and I can do a lot of things. Instead I hate to be sleepy and lazy, to have headache and drip nose that make me go from bed to the sofa without doing anything consistent. Neither the computer helped... my eyes were watering at the screen!

But I had time to look for some inspiring images... what about rest in alcove like these?

Emma

Finally I can publish this post, I could not spoil the surprise and show it on the blog before giving the gift.
It come with me to Greece this summer... so you can imagine how long it has been with me... then once  I have finished embroidering it passed into the hands of Marika as my beloved Union Jack for the making up.
This time the cushion was a present. It's a special gift for Emma. Emma is the daughter of a very dear friend of mine, we've known each other forever and we have been together through both beautiful and bad things...
I'm really lucky with my friends, the distance has never been a problem. Physically distant, different studies and paths, or equal and parallel, but still very close. After months we meet for a few hours or a few days, with the same confidence that it's never changed over the years.

Emma is my goddaughter, me ungrateful that I moved abroad when she was just a baby! This cushion is for her... who is now 3 years old and who may have preferred a toy, but which I hope she will appreciate when she will grew up. Meanwhile the cushion is on her bed, she says that it is soft, and that it is a present from Francy, pointing London on the globe!

For the first time I experienced the embroidery over the needlepoint canvas. To be a beginner with no experience with needle and thread, I'm pretty satisfied!

I chose pink and lilac and a lot of pompoms... but I like to think that it is a piece that's going to be always with her, she may change the fabric and remake the pillow every time she will like.

Falling in love

Let's start again!
I would like to be energetic and strong, but unfortunately I'm slow...
I had long and beautiful holidays, but the time is never enough to enjoy family and friends as I'd like. I ate (a lot), I drunk (a lot), I traveled (a lot), I slept (not enough)... and now let's start again!
Back at home breaking the door at 3 am, what a nice surprise!
And now, sick with my best friend kleenex, and with the fridge full of delicatessen made in Italy despite my intention of detox, I set the holidays aside and I start the new year full of exciting news!

I've decided to restart with a powerful project:

There's little to say, words are superfluous for the thunderbolt...
I like everything, what to add?
This is the London house of Debi Treloar, photographer: bright, colourful, eccentric, a story in pictures of joy and love for objects from the past.

Welcome 2013

I wish you all the best... with my personal goal to keep these words always in my mind:

Well, if you want to sing out, sing out

And if you want to be free, be free

'Cause there's a million things to be
You know that there are

And if you want to live high, live high
And if you want to live low, live low
'Cause there's a million ways to go
You know that there are

You can do what you want
The opportunity's on
And if you can find a new way
You can do it today
You can make it all true
And you can make it undo
you see ah ah ah
its easy ah ah ah
You only need to know

Well if you want to say yes, say yes
And if you want to say no, say no
'Cause there's a million ways to go
You know that there are

And if you want to be me, be me
And if you want to be you, be you
'Cause there's a million things to do
You know that there are

Well, if you want to sing out, sing out
And if you want to be free, be free
'Cause there's a million things to be
You know that there are
You know that there are
You know that there are
You know that there are
You know that there are
