Happy FIRST year!

1 anno di blog, e non solo...

Per non divagare sui bilanci... solo 2 cose:

Un GRAZIE enorme a chi mi legge, a chi commenta e a chi passa solo a dare una sbirciatina, a chi mi conosce di persona (e spero mi senta vicina anche se fuori dal continente) e a chi mi sta conoscendo un po' meglio.

E un BRAVA, stavolta a me... perche' ci vuole tempo e costanza per far crescere questa creatura, e senza nemmeno accorgermi ha un anno... e' proprio vero che mettere passione annulla la non-voglia e la stanchezza!

I should stop for a moment and take stock, but I prefer to postpone... 

So, I would say only 2 things:

THANK YOU to my readers, who comment and those who spend only a peek, to those who know me in person (and I hope they feel me close even if I'm outside the continent) and to who are getting to know me.

WELL DONE to me... because it takes time and perseverance to grow this baby. Without realizing it a year has passed... it's a big truth that being keen on is the secret for not feeling any weariness!

Loving antiques

Sono settimane frenetiche, si è aperta la stagione delle gite a Londra e siamo piacevolmente invasi da amici, amiche, fratelli, fidanzate, mamme ecc ecc...

Sono un tantino a rilento con qualche progetto... ci sono giorni in cui a malapena accendo il computer...

poi per caso trovo qualcosa fatto da altri che mi lascia senza parole, come questa casa:

che trasmette la passione di chi l'ha sistemata con il cuore, con delicatezza e con rispetto

perfettamente in linea con il mio amore per le cose vecchie con l'anima

che è viva, mescola audacemente stili e colori e racconta di chi la abita.

These weeks are busy,  the season of the trips to London is started and we are having a lot of pleasant visits of friends and family... 

I'm a little slow with my projects... Some days I barely turn on my computer...

Then by chance I find something made by others that leaves me speechless, as this house:

that shows the passion of those who have restored it with their heart, gently and with respect

that is perfectly aligned with my love for old things with soul

that is alive, boldly mixes styles and colours, and tells of those who live there.

Tapestry cushions

Mi occupo di cuscini... non solo di quelli, ma sicuramente di un gran bel numero di cuscini.
Magari questo potesse bastare a qualificarmi come interior designer, però è già qualcosa.

I deal with cushions... not just with cushions, but certainly with a great number of them. Unfortunately I don't think this could be enough to qualify me as an interior designer, but it's a starting point.

Sono in mezzo ai velluti, alle sete, ai campioni, alle fotografie degli ambienti dove i cuscini (o poltrone, o poggiapiedi, o tappeti...) dovranno trovare posto.
Così il gioco consiste nel trovare il giusto colore, la giusta stoffa, la giusta finitura che piaccia al cliente e che renda soddisfatti noi, ma soprattutto che sia il punto di incontro tra il ricamo e lo spazio.

I'm surrounding by velvets, silks, samples, pictures of the rooms where the cushions (or chair, or footstool, or carpet ...) will have to find a place. My task is to find the right colour, the right fabric, the right finish that please the customer and that makes us happy, but mostly that is the merger  between the embroidered piece and the space.

A volte i miei gusti sono lontani anni luce da quelli di un cliente un po' ostico, a volte invece mi trovo di fronte persone senza la minima idea che mi lasciano fare (non pensavo, ma c'è davvero tanta gente che non ha la minima immaginazione!), altre volte ci troviamo a metà strada.

Sometimes my tastes are worlds apart from a difficult customer' ones, but sometimes I deal with people without any idea and they let me free (there are really so many people who do not have any  imagination!), other times we meet midway.

Certo, forse i miei suggerimenti a volte sono un tantino eccessivi per il classico gusto di signore inglesi... ma cerco sempre di proporre qualcosa di speciale, e questo è l'aspetto che mi piace davvero... ogni pezzo è unico!

Well, maybe my suggestions are sometimes a bit excessive for the classic taste of English ladies... but I always try to offer something special, which is what I  like most... each piece is unique!

Only Roses

Prima o poi tutte le certezze sono destinate a crollare... Fin dalla scuola elementare ho sempre saputo che il mese delle rose fosse maggio, e invece NO! 

O almeno, non quest'anno e non a Londra. Il nuovo mese delle rose è giugno!

Camminare e' sempre una grande fonte di ispirazione e non riesco proprio a non stupirmi per la cura maniacale che gli inglesi hanno per il loro giardino. Gli ingressi delle case sono sempre lindi e ben tenuti, mentre le nostre scale e il nostro giardinetto sono già sporchi appena ho finito di spazzare le foglie!

Le aiuole e i vasi sono sempre in fiore, e sempre con una fioritura diversa (mi viene il dubbio che piantino qualcosa di nuovo ogni settimana!) Insomma, bisogna imparare... e perché no, prendere spunto...

Sooner or later, all the certainties are destined to crumble... Since the primary school I was convinced that May was the month for the roses, but it wasn't!
Or at least it isn't, not this year and not in London. The new month for the roses is June!
Walking is always a great source of inspiration and I just cannot be surprised at the painstaking care that the English people take of their gardens. The entrances of their houses are always clean and tidy, while our stairs and garden are already dirty as soon as I finished sweeping the leaves!
The flower beds and planters are always in bloom, and always with different flowers (I guess that they plant something new every week!) So, I must learn... and take inspiration...

Bright Brighton

Tutti i posti di mare hanno fascino, senza dubbio. Ho sempre nutrito una sana invidia per chi vive al mare, anche d'inverno... sara' anche malinconico, ma a mio avviso anche la giornata piu' cupa non e' paragonabile ad una in citta'.

There's no doubt that all the sea places have charm. I always had a bit of envy for those who live by the sea, even in winter... it would be even melancholy, but in my opinion also the most dark day there cannot be compared to one in the city.

Paesini a parte, le citta' di mare sono incredibili: a mio avviso hanno tutte, in Italia come all'estero, un'aria un po' decadente (sara' la salasedine?), con i palazzi/hotel liberty o neoclassici sul lungomare, le strade del centro pulite, sempre perfettamente pavimentate e con palma d'ordinanza, le periferie meno curate dove si alternano palazzoni di dubbio gusto e villette e i servizi.

Soprattutto se sono, e sono state in passato, stazioni balneari di un certo pregio, questi segni sono ancora piu' marcati e bisogna aggiungere il casino' e il padiglione di rappresentanza.

Apart from the villages, the cities on the sea are amazing: I think they all, in Italy as abroad, are a little decadent (maybe due to the salt?), with their liberty or neoclassical buildings and hotel on the waterfront, the streets in the centre clean, perfectly paved and of course with the palms, the suburbs not so tidy with alternating ugly blocks of flats, nice detached houses and the services for the community.

Especially if they are, and have been in the past, seaside resorts of a certain importance, these signs are even more marked and you have to add to the list of the topics also the Casino' and the representative pavilion.

E cosi' Brighton rispetta la tradizione, ma con qualcosa in piu'. Ci sono tornata dopo 15 anni e l'ho trovata viva: non vorrei esagerare, ma in qualcosa mi e' sembrata una piccola Londra, molto piu' rilassata e vivibile, ma comunque in fermento.

Brighton respects the tradition, but with something more. I went back after 15 years and I've found the city alive: I would not exaggerate, but it seemed to me a little London, of course more relaxing and easy living, but bright indeed.

Oltre ai classici Brighton Pier, Royal Pavillion e al labirinto di negozietti in The Lanes, ho scoperto Kemp Town, un quartiere parallelo alla Marina di Brighton ricco di tesori...

Nemmeno una catena (per fortuna!) ma solo bar, pub, negozi alimentari biologici, fioristi, antiquari e charity shops che sembrano boutique...

Besides the classics Brighton Pier, the Royal Pavilion and the maze of shops in The Lanes, I discovered Kemp Town, an area parallel to the Brighton Marina full of gems...

Not even a chain (thankfully!) but only bars, pubs, organic food shops, florists, antique shops and charity shops that seem boutiques...

Vi vorrei segnalare:

Pardon my french: oggetti carini e prezzi onesti, oltre a una ragazza gentilissima alla cassa

William Morris Antiques: non proprio abbordabile, ma vale un giretto per rifarsi gli occhi e trovare spunti su cosa andare a cercare in soffitta e restaurare

Kemptown Trading Post & Coffee Shop: per chi mi chiede cosa voglio fare da grande: un negozio di antiquariato, modernariato, vintage con bar/pasticceria/piccolo spazio libreria annesso.

I would like to recommend:

Pardon my french: nice and original objects, honest prices, as well as a very kind girl at the till.

William Morris Antiques: not exactly affordable, but it's worth a ride to find ideas on what to look for restoring in your attic.

Kemptown Coffee Shop & Trading Post: for those who ask me what I want to do: an antique, modern, vintage shop, plus a bar, bakery and small library.

Per la pappa: se siete stufi di fish and chips, con un minimo di competenza in materia, visto che ho vissuto per 7 mesi a Madrid, posso dire che abbiamo mangiato benissimo in un ristorantino spagnolo, se vi capita ve lo consiglio caldamente: si chiama Casa Don Carlos e lo trovate in centro, al 5 Union Street, BN1 1HA Brighton.

Eating: if you are bored of fish and chips, with a minimum of competence in the field, since I have lived for 7 months in Madrid, I can say that we had a great meal in a Spanish restaurant, which I highly recommend: Casa Don Carlos at 5 Union Street, Brighton BN1 1HA.
