Only Roses

Insomma, bisogna imparare... e perché no, prendere spunto...

Sooner or later, all the certainties are destined to crumble... Since the primary school I was convinced that May was the month for the roses, but it wasn't!
Or at least it isn't, not this year and not in London. The new month for the roses is June!
Walking is always a great source of inspiration and I just cannot be surprised at the painstaking care that the English people take of their gardens. The entrances of their houses are always clean and tidy, while our stairs and garden are already dirty as soon as I finished sweeping the leaves!
The flower beds and planters are always in bloom, and always with different flowers (I guess that they plant something new every week!) So, I must learn... and take inspiration...

For example, regarding the roses, I realized that there are repeated combinations of colours:

WHITE HOUSE + PASTEL ROSES
Facciata bianca + Rose pastello
....................................................................

DARK HOUSE + BRIGHT ROSES
Facciata scura + Rose vivaci
....................................................................

BRICKS HOUSE + PINK OR YELLOW ROSES
Facciata di mattoni + rosa

Facciata di mattoni + giallo
....................................................................

WHITE HOUSE + WHITE ROSES
Tutto bianco
....................................................................

Voi quale preferite?
Which one do you prefer?

Bright Brighton

There's no doubt that all the sea places have charm. I always had a bit of envy for those who live by the sea, even in winter... it would be even melancholy, but in my opinion also the most dark day there cannot be compared to one in the city.

Apart from the villages, the cities on the sea are amazing: I think they all, in Italy as abroad, are a little decadent (maybe due to the salt?), with their liberty or neoclassical buildings and hotel on the waterfront, the streets in the centre clean, perfectly paved and of course with the palms, the suburbs not so tidy with alternating ugly blocks of flats, nice detached houses and the services for the community.
Especially if they are, and have been in the past, seaside resorts of a certain importance, these signs are even more marked and you have to add to the list of the topics also the Casino' and the representative pavilion.

Brighton respects the tradition, but with something more. I went back after 15 years and I've found the city alive: I would not exaggerate, but it seemed to me a little London, of course more relaxing and easy living, but bright indeed.

Besides the classics Brighton Pier, the Royal Pavilion and the maze of shops in The Lanes, I discovered Kemp Town, an area parallel to the Brighton Marina full of gems...
Not even a chain (thankfully!) but only bars, pubs, organic food shops, florists, antique shops and charity shops that seem boutiques...

I would like to recommend:
Pardon my french: nice and original objects, honest prices, as well as a very kind girl at the till.

William Morris Antiques: not exactly affordable, but it's worth a ride to find ideas on what to look for restoring in your attic.

Kemptown Coffee Shop & Trading Post: for those who ask me what I want to do: an antique, modern, vintage shop, plus a bar, bakery and small library.

Eating: if you are bored of fish and chips, with a minimum of competence in the field, since I have lived for 7 months in Madrid, I can say that we had a great meal in a Spanish restaurant, which I highly recommend: Casa Don Carlos at 5 Union Street, Brighton BN1 1HA.

London to Brighton

As I told you a while ago, we took part in the London to Brighton 2012, a ride (not a race!) for classical Minis, 100% BMW free!
The departure was at the Crystal Palace Park at dawn and the weather as usual was not mild.
Since the participants are from all over the country, but also from France, the organization also provided a camping for the previous night. We slept at home, but when we arrived at 7.30am the air smelled of hot dogs and red bull (just to let you know the atmosphere!).

After the first 10 minutes of driving, you start seeing the some cars with the hood open and smoking: I'm sorry to say, but a smile escapes... as long as ahead it happens to you too!
And so shortly the atmosphere is all greetings, horns, offers / requests for help, laughs, sandwiches offered by the roadside, children wide-eyed...  a sort of Mille Miglia definitely more wild!

I suppose there were about 2000 Minis, battered or highly polished for the event, faithfully original or souped up, colourful... The participants were varied, groups of young guys or families with their babies, elderly gentlemen accompanied by their ladies, young couples like us who have decided to take this opportunity to spend two days to the sea.

Finally, with a lot quiet, we get to Brighton, miraculously with the sun... the waterfront was been closed just for us, with beauty contest (the protagonists were the old ladies with 4 wheels) and stalls   of spare parts, too technical for me!

Hand painting

Sometimes at work I paint... when we have a quite day, and sometimes it happens, I change my role and I become a painter.

Textile paints

When I was little I was quite good at drawing, with colours and paper I did my best, and often with excellent results. Then I studied architecture, and after a first year spent arguing with the squares and the tracing paper, the mouse has replaced the pencil (till the qualifying examination, an anachronistic nightmare!).
So drawing and painting were only vague memories... till I was thrown in my current job, where everything is hand made and bespoke.

I'm not an expert, but sometimes I have fun and relax with brushes and paints. I'm slowly getting going, although I must admit that painting on canvas is not the same as on a flat surface.

However I'm far away from the optimum :(

Lovin' oven

Maybe if the sun and the summer arrived it would be easier to quit... maybe I would be bored with the oven and the stoves, so as pies, cakes and other heavy food that heat indeed... Maybe we should have a bbq instead of giving to our guests a proper Christmas dinner...

Who would have thought that I would fall in the cooking addiction

I really would love to do something new, I cannot wait to finish a cabinet started months ago, or to take care of  the garden... but it is impossible! It rains everyday and I can't use paints inside the house!

So my creativity is expressing in the kitchen... here is my latest successes:

1. Zuppa di cipolle gratinata / Onions soup gratinee
3. Sformato di cavolfiore / Cauliflower flan
4. Crostata mirtilli e crema alla vaniglia / Vanilla and blueberries tart
5. Orzotto e zucca / Pearl barley and pumpkin
7. Treccia rustica (della Deliziosa Signorina Effe)/ Rustic braid bread (from here)

The recipes, if not specified differently, are my personal variations from the book "The silver spoon" (thanks to my mum!). I've discovered that I don't like to follow exactly what they suggest... my result is always far from the original, so in this way I'm not disappointed!

Full wardrobe

probabilmente come me avete problemi di spazio.

If you don't live in a palace/farm/penthouse
and if you do not have a minimum wardrobe
you would probably have some space problems, like me.

My only solution was a clothes stand.

When I have decided to buy one, I looked for a nice one, if possible elegant... I mean one to be left in my bedroom without seems too cheap.
I would like to have a chrome one, maybe gold, as those you can see in the US style hotels: but I didn't find any affordable one neither in specialized on line shops.
Here in UK you have a better choice than in Italy. You can find for example a nice (and pink!) clothes stand from Argos.

After some other considerations, I've chosen Rigga from Ikea, but it was just the starting point...

Quindi... / So...
1. ho scelto un paio tessuti che fossero adatti per la mia camera da letto / I chose a pair of fabrics with patterns suitable to my bedroom
2. ho acuistato una semplice mensola di legno grezzo / I bought a raw wooden shelf
3. ho ingaggiato mia zia e la sua macchina da cucire / I engaged my aunt and her sewer machine
4. tutto l'appendiabiti è stato rivestito... / the clothes stand has been entirely upholstered...

Nuovo look a pois e floreale!
Polka dots and floral new look!

The shelf at the bottom is another useful space...

Over the rainbow...

This is the second post dedicated to the London weather (have a look at the first one here)... I would like to say that it is a urban legend, I really enjoy destroying a false myth!
But unfortunately every cliche' is strictly respected, we had just one sunny and nice weekend (ONE!) and then the summer is finished!
By the way, no one  foreigner didn't dare complain about the hot weather, at least to avoid bad luck...

Annata sfavorevole, cosa posso farci?

It's definitely a bad year, what can I do?
I swear I never thought it would be possible for me to accept rationally such a bad luck. I am the kind of person who really love the sun, who used to study in the swimming pool, always on the beach  from 1 to 3pm with suntan oil!

But I'm looking for the bright side:
1. I don't need to separate summer and winter clothes,  both dresses and sweaters always available year round!
2. the colours are really beautiful after a rainstorm, they are more bright (do you think I'm dreaming?)
3. the green is so green, so brilliant
4. plants must not be watered, and they do not run the risk of dying of thirst... indeed it is easier to find them covered with moss (or mould?)

5. I don't need an always perfect pedicure
6. my hair is curly, so I don't run the risk of damaging my hair set
7. I'm wearing trench and mid-season coats bought ages ago and never used... the typical coat I think totally useless in Italy
8. in my previous life I think I've seen more or less the rainbow 5 times... but now it is a constant!

[Pictures from here]

But if you give me a sun-bed on the beach I'm ready to take everything back!

H&M home

H&M is a godsend and this is not a news... I remember when I discovered it for the first time years ago in Germany, it was a shock like the first time at Primark!
Have you ever seen the HOME department? I know it since a friend brought me a beautiful Christmas table runner from a trip abroad...
Home is not present in all stores... I think that unfortunately in Italy is not available (but I'm not sure ...). However there is always the chance to have a look online.

You can find H&M HOME in London in the store in Oxford Street (the one near Topshop) and in the new Westfield at Stratford.

Beige and pink bed linen

The linen bag is lovely, and it cost just £ 6.99. I have it in my kitchen for the tea towels.

Kitchen and tablecloths

The collection is not huge, but there are so many nice pieces. I was a bit skeptical about the quality, especially for the bed linen, but I must admit that after seeing them I changed my mind!

Turquoise + White and Velvet + Linen bedroom

In the current spring-summer collection you can find white, neutral and natural colours, cotton and linen... a bit of french and shabby style, absolutely romantic.
But there are also bright colours and flowers, polka dots and navy...

Spotted apron + Floral printed cushions and runner

Nothing is missing, napkins and shower curtains (it's a pity that I don't need one!), outdoor cushions and beach towels.

Shower curtain with frills + Neutral colour bathroom accessories

Two chairs

Today a project that I love...
I restored a pair of chairs with a really small effort... and in my opinion the result is amazing!
The chairs are made by solid wood, the structure was luckily in good condition... but what awful upholstery!
It has been enough to revive the natural colour of the wood and to replace the stuffing and the fabric of the seat:

Before

... and...

After

Che ne dite?
What do you think?

Turquoise...

Colore del giorno: TURCHESE!
Colour of the day: TURQUOISE!

Wikipedia ci insegna:

Wikipedia says:
Turquoise is a slightly blueish tone of light green. The color is based on the gem turquoise. The term comes from the French for Turkish. The first recorded use of turquoise as a color name in English was in 1573.

[All the images are from Pinterest]

In the next post you will see what I have restored by using this colour!
