Kitchen moodboard

Finalmente sono giunta alla fase divertente! Dopo mesi di lavori a rilento e qualche inconveniente (tipo: dover rifare il pavimento nuovo causa vite finita in una tubatura e conseguente allagamento) ci siamo, mi posso dedicare a quello che mi piace di più. 

Tra pochissimo la casina sarà sottoposta ad un trattamento di bellezza totale, la fase make up si avvicina! Non vedo l'ora... dopo le grandi pulizie potrò di nuovo essere padrona degli spazi, tirare fuori gli oggetti, sistemare i mobili. Per mesi tutto è stato in disordine, sballottato di qua e di là tra scatoloni, valigie, polvere e accatastamenti vari. 

Ci voleva, ma quanto è stato pesante... vivere in una casa under construction non è proprio il massimo. Si fa per evitare di pagare doppio, ma quanto sarebbe stato bello entrare qui con tutti i lavori già fatti...

Va beh, ormai ci siamo... nel frattempo ho già cambiato idea mille volte, ma forse ora sono decisa.

H&M Home wish list

Non vedo l'ora di potermi dedicare agli acquisti "futili". Quelli che non prosciugano il portafogli, istintivi, che non comportano scelte importanti. Quindi... no colore delle pareti, no mobili... ma oggetti, decori, soprammobili, cuscini, tessile... tutto cio' che fa casa, che personalizza un ambiente.

Di H&M HOME avevo gia' parlato qui... purtroppo non molto diffuso, vado spesso on line a vedere le novita'. E se mi capita di passare in Oxford Street entro sempre a dare un'occhiata. Una mia amica dall'Italia compila la sua shopping bag sul sito e io compro per lei. Purtroppo in negozio non sempre c'e' tutto, ma compensano con un perenne angolino saldi e aggiornando spesso la collezione.

Con questo post inauguro una nuova sezione, dedicata ai dettagli.

Si fa presto a dire "rifaccio la cucina", "diamo una rinfrescata al soggiorno"... ma poi dietro a queste frasi ci sono mille dettagli di cui e' difficile rendersi conto prima di cominciare.

Sfoglio riviste e cataloghi, mi immergo in Pinterest, mi perdo tra i blog, chiedo in giro... e raccolgo una marea di immagini. 

With this post I start a new section, dedicated to the details.

Restoring an house it's easy to say "let's redo the kitchen", "refresh the living room" ... but behind these sentences there are a thousand details difficult to imagine before you begin.

I flip through magazines and catalogs, I sink into Pinterest, I get lost in the blogs, I ask around... and I collect a lot of images.

Di alcune mi piace l'atmosfera, ma raramente mi innamoro di tutti i dettagli insieme. C'e' sempre qualcosa che non mi fa impazzire... per fortuna direi!

La mia casa deve essere mia e basta, che divertimento c'e' a copiare spudoratamente quello che hanno fatto altri?

E cosi' prendo spunti di qua e di la', faccio insomma un collage a cui aggiungo sempre qualcosa di mio.

In some pics I like the atmosphere, but I rarely fall in love with all the details together. There's always something that I doesn't like... Luckily I'd say!

Cominciamo con la parete della cucina dietro ai fornelli e al lavandino... si fa presto a dire "paraspruzzi"... ma quante possibilita' ci sono??

A kitchen with a view

Qualcuno mi ha detto che non e' sempre chiaro se, parlando di casina, intendo quella attuale o quella italiana. Forse e' vero, ma il fatto e' che per me sono "casa" entrambe. Considerare questa a Londra casa e' stata una conquista, ma certo non puo' spodestare l'altra! La' c'e' la fatica, quella vera, della domenica mattina a dipingere!

Comunque, se non riusciste a capire, vi do un consiglio: se c'e' del rosa e' Italia, questo e' poco ma sicuro. Non mi sono trattenuta col colore, tutto e' stato fatto prima dell'influenza inglese, quindi il bianco era ancora per me un non colore da usare solo come base.

Oggi, dopo l' armadio, la libreria, il bagno, il frigorifero, il Natale, vi mostro la cucina: un prima e dopo che spero vi piaccia.

La filosofia e' stata la stessa di tutta la ristrutturazione:
fai da sola il piu' possibile e conserva tutto quello che puoi.

Someone told me that is not always clear if talking about my house, I mean the current one in London or the Italian one. Maybe they are right, but actually they both are "home" for me. Considering the London house as home took a long time, but I cannot forget the other one. There I spent time and efforts, like painting on Sundays morning! 

However, in order to help you I give my advice: if there some pink it means it's Italy for sure.

I've used a lot colours there, everything has been done before the British influence: I used to consider white a fake colour, just a base for something else.

Today, after the wardrobe, the bookcase, the bathroom, the fridge and the Christmas decorations, I show you the kitchen: a before and after that I hope you will enjoy.

The style has been the same of the other rooms: 
do it yourself and keep as much as you can.

Before

Purtroppo lo spazio destinato alla cucina era talmente malmesso che davvero poco e' rimasto originale, neppure il lavello di ceramica e l'enorme finestrone con montanti in ferro che mi piacevano tanto (il primo era rotto, mentre per la finestra alla fine ho optato per un serramento nuovo scorrevole e moderni vetri piu' confortevoli).

Unfortunately, the space dedicated to the kitchen was in such poor conditions that very little is original, not even the ceramic sink and the huge window with iron uprights that I liked so much (the first was broken, and for the window I opted for a new sliding one with more comfortable double glazing).

Il risultato mi piace tantissimo: l'enorme finestra parte dal piano di lavoro fino al soffitto ed essendo al sesto piano (e ultimo) mi regala tanta luce... diciamo che e' la mia personale versione impoverita di attico newyorkese!

I love the result: the large window from the work plan up to the ceiling and being on the top floor gives a lot of light... I'm joking but I say that is my own poor version of a New York penthouse!

La cucina vera a propria e' semplicissima e bianca, e si limita alla parte inferiore. I pensili non mi piacciono in generale, e comunque non sarebbero stati adatti, avrebbero tolto spazio e luce.

Quindi le pareti laterali sono piene di mensoline antiche, ripiani e angoliere di recupero (grazie mamy!).

The proper kitchen is simple and white, and is just the lower part. I don't like kitchen wall cupboards in general, and in any case they were not suitable while they would have reduced space and light.

The side walls are full of antique brackets, shelves and recovered corner cupboards (thanks mamy!).

Soffitto bianco (sempre, sembra piu' alto) e pareti rosa intenso, della stessa tonalita' del ricamo sulle piastrelle, che sono quelle originali, ma che a cercarle nuove non avrebbero potuto piacermi di piu'!

Inutile dire che barattoli e cianfrusaglie varie sono il risultato di anni di accumulo e collezionismo e regali.

The ceiling is white (always, it seems higher) and the walls are deep pink, the same shade of the design on the tiles, which are the original ones and I love them!

Needless to say, cans and other stuff are the result of years collections and gifts!

Tra parentesi: solo per condividere la mia personale evoluzione... tutti gli elettrodomestici non ci sarebbero mai stati, quindi ho sacrificato il forno (mio pensiero: a cosa serve se ho il microonde??) per la lavastoviglie!

Adesso sarei in difficolta' nella scelta... unica soluzione: prossima cucina piu' grande, adesso la cucina non e' piu' solo lo spazio dedicato alla sopravvivenza!

By the way, only to share my personal evolution... there was not space enough for all the appliances, so I sacrificed the oven (I thought: I just need the microwave) for the dishwasher!

Now I'd be in trouble with the choice... the only solution is to look for a bigger kitchen as it isn't anymore just a survival space!

H&M home

Che H&M sia una manna dal cielo non è una novità... ricordo quando l'ho scoperto, anni fa, per la prima volta in Germania, uno shock come la prima volta da Primark!

Ma avete mai visto il reparto CASA?

L'ho scoperto quando un'amica, di ritorno da un viaggio all'estero, mi ha portato un bellissimo runner natalizio...

La linea casa non è presente in tutti i negozi, anzi... credo proprio che purtroppo in Italia non ci sia (ma non ne sono sicura...). Comunque c'è sempre la possibilità di dare un'occhiata on line.

H&M is a godsend and this is not a news... I remember when I discovered it for the first time years ago in Germany, it was a shock like the first time at Primark! 

Have you ever seen the HOME department? I know it since a friend brought me a beautiful Christmas table runner from a trip abroad... 

Home is not present in all stores... I think that unfortunately in Italy is not available (but I'm not sure ...). However there is always the chance to have a look online.

Il sacchetto porta biancheria in lino è delizioso, giusto per darvi un'idea costa £ 6.99. Lo tengo in cucina, per i canovacci.

The linen bag is lovely, and it cost just £ 6.99. I have it in my kitchen for the tea towels.

Kitchen and tablecloths

La collezione non è enorme, ma ci sono davvero tanti pezzi carini. Ero un po' scettica sulla qualità, soprattutto per la biancheria da letto, ma devo ammettere che vedendoli mi sono ricreduta!

The collection is not huge, but there are so many nice pieces. I was a bit skeptical about the quality, especially for the bed linen, but I must admit that after seeing them I changed my mind!

Nella collezione di questa primavera-estate ci sono tanto bianco, colori neutri e naturali, cotone e lino... stile un po' francese e un po' shabby, decisamente romantico.

Ma ci sono anche i colori e i fiori, i pois, il blu...

In the current spring-summer collection you can find white, neutral and natural colours, cotton and linen... a bit of french and shabby style, absolutely romantic.

But there are also bright colours and flowers, polka dots and navy...

Non manca nulla, dai tovaglioli alle tende per la doccia (quasi è un peccato che non mi serva!), dai cuscini per le sedie del giardino ai teli da mare.

Nothing is missing, napkins and shower curtains (it's a pity that I don't need one!), outdoor cushions and beach towels.

C'è qualcosa di mistico nel mettere ordine negli armadi... non lo faccio praticamente mai, ma dopo mi sento meglio. Non sfuggono a questa regola nemmeno gli armadietti della cucina, che però sono più semplici da riorganizzare e quindi mi danno forse anche più soddisfazione.
Non importa se poi tutto questo ordine e pulizia dureranno al massimo poche ore, giusto il tempo di cucinare di nuovo... posso sperare nell'uscire a cena o nella consegna a domicilio!
Ho riorganizzato l'armadietto della cucina, e ho finalmente riutilizzato i barattoli di vetro collezionati da qualche tempo (diciamo che conservarli vuoti per occupare solo spazio non mi sembrava una grande idea!).

There is something mystical in tiding the cabinets... I very rarely do it, but after I feel better.

It's the same for the kitchen's cabinets, that are easier to reorganize and so probably they give me more satisfaction.

Never mind that this order and cleaning resist for few hours, just till the next cooking session... I can hope in going out for dinner or for a home delivery!
I've reorganized my kitchen cabinet and finally I have used my collection of glass jars (let me say that keeping them empty is a waste of space, not a great idea!)

Complici la new entry pellicola adesiva effetto lavagna (acquistata su Amazon) e gli animaletti (sono i classici giochi dei bimbi, che ho riverniciato di bianco, idea non mia, viene dal web) ne sono soddisfatta...
I colori neutri, bianco e beige, li rendono "eleganti" ma con l'etichetta a zig zag e gli animaletti sono anche un po' pop!

Thanks to the new entry self adhesive chalkboard paper (from Amazon) and the toy animal figurines just painted (idea from the web) I'm satisfied of my work...

Neutral colours white and beige add to my jars an elegant touch but the zigzag labels and the animals are quite pop!

Consiglio: il coperchio rivestito in tessuto è carinissimo, ma io lo trovo davvero poco funzionale, soprattutto per le cose che si utilizzano di frequente e magari di fretta. Ho perciò attaccato il tessuto con lo scotch biadesivo direttamente al coperchio, così non scappa via ogni volta!

Tip: the lip covered with fabric is pretty nice, but I think it's very uncomfortable, especially for things that have to be used often and maybe hurriedly. So I've used a bit of double sided tape to fix it!

Li abbiamo usati per un po', e sono davvero carini... ma ammettiamolo non proprio funzionali.
Così ecco le new entries... decisamente più comodi, capienti e da vivere nella quotidianità, esattamente in stile pub.

Sono accessori comodi, semplici e secondo me bellissimi perché classici e senza tempo.
Costano davvero poco, visto che si trovano ovunque! Io, ad esempio, li ho presi in uno di quei negozi ferramenta, casalinghi ecc ecc ecc che vendono di tutto.

I think they are accessories simple and beautiful because they are classical and timeless.

They are cheap, since they can be found everywhere! For instance, I bought them in one of those shops that sells everything, housewares, hardware...

Wish List

Ci sono acquisti meditati e non impulsivi, perche' non si e' convinti, perche' non sono proprio a buon mercato...
E ci sono acquisti che invece si fanno a cuor leggero, che ti fanno contenta, quegli acquisti che esci dal negozio e torni a casa a scartarli e a mostrarli tutta sorridente.

Per me sono gli acquisti del buon umore, non si spende una fortuna e sono oggetti talmente carini che il solo guardarli e' un piacere...
Inutile ricordare che sono nella patria delle cavolate... ops, scusate, volevo dire degli oggetti senza cui non si puo' vivere, ma ammetto quasi sempre superflui.

Quindi, ogni tanto mi concedo qualche capriccio, tra l'altro perdonabilissimo... Ecco la mia wish list del momento, compresi gli ultimi acquisti:

And there are purchases that are made with a light heart, that make you happy, that when you leave the shop you go home, discard and show them smiling.

To me they are the purchases of the good mood, you don't have to spend a lot of money and they are so cute that just looking at them is a pleasure...

It's needless to say that I'm in the home of the stupid things... sorry, I meant things without which you cannot live, but almost always unnecessary.

Conoscete Emma Bridgewater? Probabilmente si'... ma in caso contrario, oggi ve la presento.

Emma ha fondato il suo marchio nel 1985, cercando un regalo originale per la sua mamma... ed ora e' un'azienda solida che gestisce con il marito (un sogno insomma...)

Tipicamente inglese, ma con un tocco "mediterraneo"... a me lo spessore delle sue ceramiche ricordava tanto il servizio siciliano che ho rubato a mia mamma... ed in effetti, leggendo la storia sul sito internet, una delle sue ispirazioni e' stata proprio la terracotta italiana!

Decorate a mano, le fantasie sono una rivisitazione di motivi classici, ma appaiono decisamente contemporanee, e a tratti pop.

Do you know Emma Bridgewater? Probably you do... but if not, I'll introduce her.

Emma has established her brand in 1985, while she was looking for an original present for her mum... and now her brand is a competitive company that she runs with her husband (basically... a dream!)

The style is typically British  but with something Mediterranean... the thick pottery reminded me some Sicilian plates I had from my mum... and I've just discovered from the website that  the Italian terracotta is one of her inspirations!

Decorated by hand, the patterns are   an interpretation of classical designs, but they look modern and a little pop.

Altra cosa che ho scoperto da poco: si puo' anche avere il proprio pezzo Emma Bridgewater personalizzato! Da tenere presente...

You can find them everywhere, in the stores (I love the one in Fulham!) or in the kitchen corner in the main department stores! And the good news is that they can be delivered all over Europe buying on-line!

Pottery... again

Che io ultimamente sia fissata con la ceramica non è una novità...
Sto anche studiando un pò... nozioni che mi servono per riconoscere in giro cose di un certo valore e qualità dalle altre cianfrusaglie.
Tra le varie scoperte, un celebre marchio tipicamente British.

Si chiama WEDGWOOD... e sicuramente avrete già visto i loro prodotti più tipici e riconoscibili, piatti, vasi e tazze di un blu pastelloso con decori bianchi a silhouette.

It's WEDGWOOD... and you have probably already seen their most typical and recognizable plates, vases and cups in a creamy blue decorated with white silhouette.

Gli effetti della convivenza... i LEGO in tavola

La convivenza ha un sacco di effetti, positivi per lo piu'!
Non intendo raccontarvi della mia vita sentimentale, non preoccupatevi...
E' innegabile che vivere insieme ad un'altra persona sia un continuo scambio-incontro-scontro su tutto, nel mio caso anche sull'arredamento!

Living with another person has a lot of effects, mostly positive.

I will not tell you about my love life, don't worry...

But it's obvious that it is a continuous exchange, a clash, for everything, in my case even for the furniture.

A. non e' quello che mi lascia fare... o meglio, ho abbastanza carta bianca perche' gli stili coincidono, ma ci mette sempre del suo.
Ad oggi l'unico veto che ha posto e' sul rosa (non perche' non gli piaccia in assoluto, ma solo per bloccare sul nascere la mia tendenza ad avere TUTTO rosa!)
Comunque... la casina dove abitiamo e' per forza di cose fatta da entrambi, e in ogni singolo oggetto e' chiara la provenienza... qualcosa e' propriamente "mio", cosa "di entrambi", e qualcosa "suo".

A. is  not the kind of person that let me do whatever I want at home... or rather... he gives me a free hand because we have the same style, but he always has his say.

To this day the only forbidden thing is the pink (not because he doesn't like at all, but only to prevent my tendency to  use pink ALL OVER).

Anyway, our small house is necessarily made by both, and the origin of each object is clear. Something is truly "mine", something "his" and something "of both".

Cosi' mi trovo ad avere ed usare oggetti che personalmente non avrei MAI acquistato... e la cosa strana e' che mi piace!

So, I'm using some objects that personally I would NEVER bought... but the strange is that I like it!

Finalmente l'ho fotografato! Sono tornata nella mia casina in Italia qualche settimana fa e ho fatto scorta di materiale... vedrete!

I finally photographed it! I came back to my little house in Italy some weeks ago and I stocked up on items to post... you will see!

Era da un pò di tempo che volevo pubblicare questo vassoio... il vassoio per le colazioni (a letto) che spesso mi ha allietato il risveglio negli ultimi 2 anni...

L'ho acquistato da Semeraro, ma era come al solito troppo "sobrio" per i miei gusti... quindi...
 

1. ho incollato una carta adesiva plastificata a quadretti sul piano... così è perfettamente lavabile!

2. ho finito i bordi con passamaneria colorata nei toni del giallo e del rosa

It's been a while that I wanted to publish this tray... the perfect tray for my breakfast (in bed) that often has delighted my wakening up in the last two years...

I bought it at Semeraro, but as usual it was too "simple" for my taste... so... 

1. I pasted a checked adhesive paper on the top... so it is washable!

2. I finished the edges with coloured trimmings in pink and yellow

Qui lo vedete apparecchiato con teiera, tè e bricco per il latte... tutto importato da Londra nel periodo di pendolarismo!
