Souvenirs from Greece

Chi non torna a casa da una vacanza senza souvenirs? Per me non è molto difficile, visto che comprare, sempre e di tutto, non è mai stato un grande sforzo, anzi!

E anche se non si va in un paradiso dello shopping, ci si può sempre accontentare delle prelibatezze locali. E così è andata quest'anno... non potendo portarci a casa un paio di grigliate di pesce, in Grecia abbiamo fatto scorta di pomodorini secchi, capperi, ouzo e raki.

Who doesn't bring back from holidays any souvenir? It' s not difficult for me, since the purchase has never been a great effort indeed!

And even if you don't spend your holidays in a paradise for shopping, you can enjoy the local delicatessen. And this is what happened this summer... not being able to bring home a couple of grilled fish, in Greece we stocked up on sun-dried tomatoes, capers, ouzo and raki.

Rientrati a casa, dopo aver posizionato il magnete kitsch d'ordinanza sul frigorifero (un asinello) e dopo aver travasato gli alcolici in bottiglie "casalinghe", ho preparato le etichette:

Once at home, after placing the kitsch magnet on the fridge as usual (a donkey) and having poured the spirits into new and nice bottles, I made the labels:

Sono semplicissime e veloci da fare, bastano dei timbrini...  ma molto carine, non trovate?

They are simple and quick, you just need some stamps... but they are very nice, aren't they?

Siccome non torno mai a casa senza un po' di "terra" del luogo che visito, siano sassi, conchiglie o sabbia, da quest'anno ho pensato di mettere i miei ricordi in un barattolo di vetro con etichetta... sara' carino tra qualche anno ripercorrere i viaggi barattolo dopo barattolo!

Since I never come back without a little piece of the land I visit, stones, shells or sand, this year I decided to put my memories in a glass jar with label...it  will be pretty in a few years to recall the journeys jar after jar!

Cha Cha (Cha)

Oggi vorrei condividere con voi una recente scoperta che ho fatto navigando un po' 

nel web. E non parlo di balli, nonostante il titolo...

Sono a caccia della giusta inspirazione per rifare la parte superiore del mio sgabello da cucito, e sono magneticamente attratta da scena floreali, dal colore viola, lilla, verde acqua... Magari poi cambiero' idea, ma questo e' il mood del momento!

Mi sono imbattuta in Chacha by Iris, un brand parigino che mi ha incantata

Today I want to share with you one of my recent discoveries through the web. And I am not talking about dancing, despite the title...

I'm looking for an inspiration to redo the top of my sewing stool, and I am magnetically attracted by floral scene, the color purple, lilac, aquamarine... Maybe after I will change my idea, but this is the mood of the moment!

Mi piace l'accostamento tra le atmosfere oniriche e i colori decisi, quasi fluo... Sono pattern moderni e senza tempo contemporaneamente. Insomma, la palette che vorrei usare anche io per il mio progetto:

I like the way they use to contrast dreamlike atmospheres and vivid colours, almost fluorescent... Patterns are modern and timeless at the same time. Shortly, this is the palette that I would like to use for my project:

They were shorts (now fabric pom pom)

Erano dei pantaloncini di cotone leggermente elasticizzato, talmente vecchi che non mi ricordo nemmeno da dove venissero... Tenuta casalinga perfetta, li ho usati così tanto da esserci affezionata, ma era arrivata la loro ora, l' elastico mi aveva ormai abbandonata da tempo.

Invece di liberarmene (come sicuramente mi avrebbe invitato a fare mia mamma!) li ho trasformati in un pom pom, cosi' continuano ad essere con me.

They were slightly elasticized cotton shorts, so old that I don't even remember where they came from... Perfect and comfortable to wear at home, I used them for so long that I am attached to them. Unfortunately they are now ins ugh a bad condition to be dismissed.
Instead of throwing them away (as my mum for sure would have suggested) I've turned them into a pom pom, so I still have them with me.

Ecco i passaggi e l'occorrente:
Here are the steps and what you need:

1. 

Tagliare il cotone (anche una maglietta va benissimo, purché elasticizzata) a strisce più o meno larghe uguali (1cm), cercando di lasciarle il più lunghe possibile
Cut the cotton (even a t-shirt is fine, as long as elastic) stripes more or less the same width (1cm), trying to leave as long as possible

2. 

Preparare 2 cerchi di cartone identici, con un foro centrale
Prepare 2 identical circles of cardboard with a central hole

3. 

Inserire tra i 2 cerchi una striscia, facendone uscire le estremità (ho utilizzato questo trucco per la prima volta, finora avevo fatto pom poms senza questo trucchetto e vi assicuro che il passaggio finale è molto più semplice!)
Place a string between the two cardboard, leaving out the ends (So far I had done pom poms without this trick and I assure you that the final step is much easier!)

4. 

Iniziare ad avvolgere le strisce intorno al "panino" di cartone. Usate quanto più strisce potete, consiglio almeno 3 giri completi. 

Ricordate di lasciare fuori le estremità della stringa centrale.

Begin to wrap the strips around the "sandwich" of cardboard. Use as many strips you have, I recommend at least 2-3 layers.
Remember to leave out the ends of the central string.

5. 

Tagliare lungo il bordo esterno del cerchio, facendo sempre attenzione alle due estremità. Mentre procedete nel taglio lungo la circonferenza il pom pom si aprirà, quindi tenete contemporaneamente premuto al centro con la mano libera. A mio avviso fare questo passaggio con le strisce larghe di cotone è molto più semplice che con il classico filo d lana. Il tessuto rimane un pochino schiacciato per la pressione delle mani al centro e non esplode.

Appena avrete terminato il taglio, stringete i 2 fili che avete lasciato fuori in modo che stringano al centro il pompom. Annodateli molto stretti tra loro.
Consiglio: usate delle buone forbici!

Cut along the outer edge of the circle, always paying attention to the two ends. While you keep cutting the pom pom will open, so hold and press the center with your free hand. I think that this step with wide strips of cotton is much easier than with the classic thread of wool. The fabric is a little crushed by the pressure of the hands and does not explode.

As soon as you have finished the cutting, tighten the inside string at the center of the pom pom and tie. 
Tip: use good scissors!

6.

Il pom pom è fatto! Ma sarà molto irregolare, quindi armatevi di forbici e iniziate ad accorciare e pareggiare. Più vicino arriverete al centro, più "sodo" sarà il pom pom.
The pompom is done! But it will be very irregular, so take the scissors and start to shorten and balance. The closer you get to the center, the more firm is the pom pom.

Voilà: pom pom cicciotto di cotone!

Mancherebbe ancora il resoconto delle mie quarta e quinta settimana di vacanza, ma quelle meritano un post a parte, e le fotografie non sono ancora pronte (potete comunque avere un'anteprima in Instagram...)

Intanto siamo gia' a meta' settembre... e ho la pelle d'oca al pensiero di quello che mi aspetta da oggi e nei prossimi mesi. Ci sono tante cose in cantiere, grandi e piccole, e spero di poter dare libero sfogo al mio entusiasmo prestissimo.

Nel frattempo ho trovato un ottimo catalogo di cose importanti da tenere a mente: alcuni punti sono solo divertenti, altri geniali. Mi ha fatto sorridere... certi sono così ovvi che sarebbero scontati... ma quanto è vero che non è sempre così!

Meanwhile it's already mid September... and I get goose bumps if I think of what awaits me from today and in the coming months. There are so many things in the pipeline, big and small, and I hope to give vent to my happiness soon.

In the meantime I found a great list of important things to keep in mind: some of them are funny, others brilliant. It made me smile... there are so obvious points that would be obvious... but truly they are not!

I have dedicated a cuscion... first successful experiment of painting on fabric!

Steps:

1. stampate un'immagine ad alta definizione e della misura desiderata

2. tracciate le sagome su lucido di uno spessore che sia visibile attraverso il tessuto, io le ho stilizzate come semplici silhouette

3. ricalcate le sagome sul tessuto e poi passate ai colori, che devono essere appositi per i tessuti

4. lasciate asciugare (pochissimo) e stirate per fissare il tutto.

Steps:

1. print the high definition image at the size you want 

2. outline the design with a thick pen on a tracing paper to make it visible through the fabric, I've traced just the silhouettes

3. traced out the shapes on the fabric and then paint, the colours must be suitable for fabrics

4. let it dry (it takes short time) and then iron to secure everything.
